Declaration of marital union - Common-law union
Lawyers for declaration of marital union (common-law marriage)
In Colombia, common-law marriage or de facto unions are a legally recognized form of cohabitation that grants rights and responsibilities to the couples who form them. Both heterosexual and same-sex couples have the same rights, thanks to the equality and non-discrimination guaranteed by our Constitution.
To formalize a common-law union in Colombia, you simply need to live together and consider each other as a stable couple. This grants you certain important rights, such as survivor's pension, inheritance of assets in the event of the death of one of the partners, disability pension, access to medical care, and the formation of a joint property regime, among others.
Although it is not mandatory, it is recommended to formalize the common-law union through a public deed to guarantee and enforce these rights.
